Many assumptions could be made when choosing a senior care option. It’s important to be aware of what the senior care facility offers and more importantly — what they don’t offer at all. Our staff at Lester Senior Living understands how important senior care factors are often overlooked, and have made a list of what you shouldn’t compromise on when it comes to your loved one’s professional care.
Don’t overlook the different levels of senior care offered. Making the move into assisted living is not something that should be rushed. Just like the home-buying process, it takes time to visit each place to see if you can envision living there before making an investment. Arguably, one of the most important factors before moving into a new place is deciding whether or not you can see yourself there in the future. The same goes for assisted living facilities. It’s important not to overlook the types of care offered at each community, and if that care can be accessed under the same roof. This is why leading senior communities, like Lester Senior Living, offer scalable services like independent living, assisted living and professional memory care. Allowing residents to stay in the comfort of their own community will effectively reduce some of the stress that comes with an unexpected medical diagnosis. Don’t overlook the type of activities seniors can take part in.In order for an older adult to maintain their independence, they must engage in an active lifestyle. Many senior living communities understand this concept wholeheartedly, and are making it a priority to offer a variety of physical activities to their residents. At Lester Senior Living, our activity directors create a calendar each month that highlights different physical activities, social clubs and seasonal events taking place in the community. Activities like chair dancing, zumba and “Balance and Mindfulness” are just a few of the many ways we are keeping seniors active, engaged and independent. Don’t overlook how the senior community prioritizes resident independence. Aside from weekly activities, a great senior living community should prioritize the independence of their residents in other ways. For example, our senior living community in Morris County provides support with ADL’s (activities of daily living), so that residents have more time to make more independent choices when it comes to how they would like to live their life at our community. With daily chores like cooking, cleaning and managing medications taken care of by our professionally trained staff, residents can dabble in new interests like learning to paint, garden or even taking a higher education course. Active Senior Lifestyles in Morris County, NJ Here at Lester Senior Living, our mission is to help each of our seniors maintain their independence, while giving them access to any support services they need. Our senior care can be scaled as necessary to accommodate your loved one’s needs, even if your loved one receives an unexpected diagnosis five years down the line. Matzah ball soup is usually the go-to comfort food for us, but we can’t sleep on a good mushroom soup on a cold winter’s night. Not to mention, mushroom soup or krupnik is very relevant to our roots. Back in the day, the Jews of Eastern Europe had krupnik almost daily because of their connection to the wild mushrooms that grew in abundance nearby. The key to this recipe is the slow cooker. Cooking the soup on low heat for 8 hours really lets all the flavors marinate, giving you a taste that will have you going back for seconds – and maybe even thirds.

But, did you know that sleep directly correlates to heart health? REM and non-REM sleep is actually crucial for your heart rate. In this article, we will go over how this affects your heart health and different ways seniors can achieve better sleep.
Heart Rate During The Stages of Sleep Each cycle or phase of sleep affects the speed of your heart rate and contributes to the health of your heart. When we first drift off to sleep, our heart rate starts to slow down to its resting rate – meaning our hearts don’t have to work so hard to pump blood throughout our bodies. This stage of light sleep (or Non-REM sleep) is how most of us spend half of the night. When we enter the next phase of sleep, deep sleep, our blood pressure drops and our heart rate slows even more – up to 30% below the resting rate. Then there is an even deeper sleep REM (rapid eye movement) that happens when we dream. During REM sleep, the sympathetic nervous system is activated, causing an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. This is thought to be a protective mechanism to help the body respond to potential danger or stressful situations – like being chased in a bad dream. So, what does this all really mean? In short, entering each stage of sleep successfully every night allows the heart to properly rest and recharge. This is so important because poor sleeping patterns have been linked to a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease and strokes. If you or a loved one is having trouble sleeping well, our caregivers in Morris County have put together a list of different ways older adults can improve their sleeping habits. Ways Seniors Can Sleep Better
At Lester Senior Living, our seniors sleep more soundly knowing that one of our staff members is always onsite, and ready to help if the need arises. Spending Valentine’s Day with a senior who has lost a loved one is often a more special and meaningful experience. It’s a chance to remember that this holiday is more than a Hallmark card and chocolates, it’s about showing and spreading love. If you’re not sure where to start, we have a few ways to make Valentine’s Day more memorable with your senior loved one.
We understand that some health, memory and mobility concerns may prevent some seniors from leaving their assisted living community to celebrate Valentine’s Day. So, we encourage you to celebrate with your loved one at Lester Senior Living instead! Last year we celebrated by making beautiful flower arrangements and learning about the history of Hershey’s chocolate while snacking on some Hershey kisses. We also encourage you to join your loved one in our spacious dining room for breakfast, lunch or dinner – not just on Valentine’s Day but all year round.
