Like exercising our bodies, exercising our minds is just as important as we age. Seniors who engage in memory-stimulating activities regularly have a greater chance of strengthening their cognitive abilities and keeping memory disorders at bay. What’s great is It’s not hard to incorporate these activities into anyone’s daily schedule. And the best part is: they’re fun to do! With that being said, our memory care advisors in Morris County, NJ have put together a list of some memory stimulating activities to keep senior minds sharp.
Trivia: With a variety of topics to choose from, trivia never loses its novelty. Playing different topics like music, history, movies and current events can do two important things for seniors. For one, it can help them tap into different parts of the brain to recall the answers. And the second, it can strengthen short-term memory by giving them something new to learn (we’ll expand more on this later). Not to mention, trivia is also a great way to gather with friends and socialize – which we do a lot of at JCHC’s Lester Senior Living. At Lester, we hold group trivia sessions every week that all of our residents are welcome to participate in. Sudoku: If you haven’t heard of Sudoku and are good with numbers, you’re really missing out! This game works by filling in a 9 by 9 grid using the numbers 1 to 9, never using them more than once vertically, horizontally or within the 3 by 3 subgrids. Sudoku is a great way to practice patience and strengthen pattern recognition. If you or a loved one is looking to play, you can find Sudoku puzzles in your local newspaper, online, or you could purchase a Sudoku book filled with puzzles ranging from easy to difficult. Crossword puzzles: There’s nothing like a good ol’ crossword puzzle with your morning coffee. These puzzles help a ton with memory recollection and your problem solving skills. Just like trivia, there are many different themes to choose from like sports, science, entertainment and art – to name a few. Alongside Sudoku, crossword puzzles can also be found in your local newspaper or you can download the Crossword app to your smartphone or tablet for free. Arts and crafts: One of the best memory-stimulating activities that seniors can take part in are arts and crafts. Keeping their hands busy helps to maintain dexterity, and being able to explore their creativity supports the imaginative parts of the brain. This activity is a win-win because seniors could also use it as an opportunity to make unique, handmade gifts for their friends and family. Learn a New Skill: As we’ve mentioned earlier, learning a new skill is key to keeping your memory sharp. At Lester Senior Living, we encourage memory care residents to attend guest lectures, enroll in different classes and clubs, and read new books in our community library. All of these activities support the brain in creating new neurological connections. Let’s start by saying there is no wrong time to move into assisted living. However, choosing a certain time of the year can make the transition easier for everyone involved. For one, moving during the winter months can be tough due to all the holiday festivities going on. Not to mention, snow can make packing up boxes and traveling back and forth in the moving van a lot more difficult. If you and your senior loved ones are able to choose when to make the move, we have a few reasons why summer is the best time.
The weather goes according to plan. As we mentioned briefly above, there is no chance of snow during the summers to complicate traveling back and forth with moving boxes. More importantly, there’s no chance of ice to slip on. It’s also a lot warmer outside during the summer months, so there’s less chance of a common cold or flu throwing a wrench in the mix. Longer days to take advantage of. When the days are longer, and the sun is shining, most people tend to be more productive. Which means it’s a great time to take on a large, time-consuming task like moving. It could also be more cost effective to make the move in a full day, with moving trucks often being rented by the hour. It will feel like a long day for sure, but will be well worth it to get it all done in one shot. The best time to sell, sell, sell. With the current seller’s market still going strong and more people taking time off for vacation, summer is the best time for mom and dad to get the most bang for their buck on their house. Take advantage of all the action! It’s a great time to jump right into community life since many events and activities onsite are being held outdoors. At Lester Senior Living, there are many fun, outdoor activities to take part in each month. Some of our crowd favorites include “The Garden Club,” “Iced Tea and Cookies on The Patio,” “Stretch & Flex” and “Yoga with Kim.” Assisted Living for Seniors in NJ At our community in Morris County NJ, we offer a wide range of care services for aging seniors in a secure and welcoming environment. There are small changes you can make now that could really benefit your health in the future. These healthy lifestyle habits will also ensure you stay independent for much longer, whether you’re living at home or in a senior community. Adopting just a few of the tips our independent living team has compiled below will make you feel great as you grow older.
Get enough sleep! Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Getting a solid 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep is proven to have positive effects on your memory, focus and concentration. If you’re having trouble sleeping soundly at night, try to establish a consistent bedtime routine and make your environment optimal for sleeping by keeping it cool and dark. Limit alcohol consumption. Drinking too much alcohol on a weekly (or worse, daily) basis, can negatively impact your sleeping habits and your health. More specifically, consuming too much alcohol can lead to the following issues: high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, cancer, learning disabilities and memory problems. Go for regular checkups. Scheduling regular checkups with your doctor and other medical professionals can help you catch health issues early and treat them before it’s too late. Another important factor to consider is to start seeing a geriatric doctor who specializes in treating older people with more complex, chronic conditions. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Coupled with daily exercise, the single most important lifestyle habit to adopt is eating healthier as you age. Eating whole foods that are high in fiber and low in saturated fats will ensure your body receives the proper nutrition it needs, while also lowering your risk of developing chronic conditions. Manage your medications. This may seem like common sense, but we’re here to remind you of how important it is to take medications exactly as prescribed by your geriatric doctor. Overdosing or skipping medications will only put your health in more jeopardy. It’s also worth it to schedule monthly medication reviews with your doctor, to keep track of what medications are still necessary for you to take. To help you better keep track of correct doses, you should also think about downloading a medication reminder app. Healthy, independent living at JCHC At JCHC’s senior living communities in New Jersey, our aim is to ensure that each of our residents maintains their health, quality of life and independence.
