There are many reasons why someone chooses to live at a senior community. To make acceptance of the move as easy as possible, the senior living community in question should tick off all your boxes. Not all senior communities are created equal, and you will find that your loved one will not feel at home in every facility you visit. With that being said, our team at Lester Senior Living in Whippany, NJ has put together a list of what to look for when picking a senior living community.
How does the senior community help residents maintain their independence? Great senior living communities prioritize the independence of their residents. At Lester for instance, seniors in the independent living apartments are in a physically separate building with others of similar mental and physical acuity. Furthermore communities like Lester provide support with ADL’s (activities of daily living), i.e. daily chores like cooking, cleaning, managing medications and getting dressed for the day so its a step up from over 55 apartment living while still having an independent lifestyle.. With this support in place, your mom or dad has more time to pursue activities they truly want to do. Have they ever wanted to learn how to do crafts, paint, learn to dance, take extended learning courses, watch classic movies? All of these and much more are possible at Lester Independent Living. Does the senior community offer different levels of care? Nobody wants to move twice. What we’re getting at is, the transition to senior living should only be made once if you choose the right community that offers different levels of comprehensive care inside the same campus. This is why leading facilities, like Lester Senior Living, offer scalable services like independent living, assisted living and advanced memory care. This allows older adults to stay in the comfort of their own community, even if their care needs change. If a higher level of support like memory care is required, they can easily transition to a specialized wing at the same facility. Does the senior community offer different ways to be active? Staying active is key to maximizing your independence, and quality of life as a senior. Modern senior living communities understand this notion completely, and have stepped up to the plate in regards to the different activities they offer senior residents on a weekly – or even daily – basis. At Lester Senior Living, our activity directors create a calendar each month that highlights different activities, clubs and events taking place on site. Some of our crowd favorites include chair dancing, zumba and “stretch & flex.” We also have a dedicated fitness center on site that residents can frequent at any time if class isn’t in session. L’shanah tova! It’s almost Rosh Hashanah and we hope everyone has a sweet new year. In preparation for this holiday, and to ensure this new year is sweeter than the last, we must prepare the key foods of Rosh Hashanah. Perhaps the most delicious being the honey apple cake. Eating honey was first referenced in the book of Nehemiah and eating red apples was first dated back to Rosh Hashanah in 1208. That’s a lot of honey and apples over the years! This traditional recipe provided by our chefs at the Lester assisted living community in Morris County combines both of these classic foods in the tastiest way.

It is also a time for reflection, where we think about the past year and how we’d like to make more positive changes in the upcoming year. While for many, Rosh Hashanah conjures up hours spent at synagogue, the best part about this holiday is celebrating with family and friends. If you’re looking for ideas, our Lester assisted living staff in Morris County have compiled great ways to enjoy Rosh Hashanah!
#1. Wish your neighbor a happy new year! Perhaps, the easiest way to spread Rosh Hashanah cheer and make a positive change is to wish your neighbor a happy new year! You never know, after wishing someone “L’shana tova!” you might strike up a conversation that leads to a new friendship. There are many different ways to greet someone during Rosh Hashanah. You could stick with a simple “Happy New Year!” like we do on December 31st. Or if you want to practice your Hebrew more, you can give one of the phrases below a chance to shine.
Like Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah is more of a synagogue holiday. What makes this synagogue service different from others is the playing of the Shofar. This is one of the oldest known wind instruments, played only during Rosh Hashanah. Symbolically, the blowing out of air through the Shofar symbolizes how we must turn inward to fix ourselves so we can then burst out and contribute to the world. One hundred notes are played on this big horn to create a special rhythm that is symbolic to the holiday. The distinct sound of this instrument signals the start of the ten ‘Days of Awe,’ leading up to Yom Kippur. #3. Eat traditional Rosh Hashanah foods! Food is an important part of any holiday, but this is especially true for Rosh Hashanah. We celebrate the positivity of the upcoming year with staple foods that are usually sweet. Some examples are apples dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet new year, as well as, challah bread, tzimmes, kugel, fish and sweet potatoes. Here is the detailed significance behind some of these foods:
