Keep moving. It’s been said by everyone from the Dalai Lama to Michelle Obama yet for seniors, it can still be hard to get going. If you’re feeling like you don’t have the motivation to get moving you have to understand that motivation isn’t going to fall right into your lap. Motivation is often something that you have to make yourself, making the choice to get moving will start to follow with the motivation you’re hoping for, But it all starts with the choice to get up and get moving. Here are some ways to get moving and get the motivation flowing. Lace-up your Walking Shoes Put on your walking shoes and step outside. Sometimes it’s a matter of telling yourself to walk for just five minutes, and then once you’re out there walking you start feeling good, and you add on another five minutes. This can continue until you’ve walked for thirty minutes or so, meanwhile, you’ve had no motivation to walk five minutes but you did it anyway. Now we want to be clear, if you’re in any kind of pain or have difficulty breathing please get help – this is not the time to be moving. Practice Safe Sun Enjoy the sun safely, spending time outside can be great for motivation. Make sure you dress appropriately and use sunscreen, lightweight long sleeve shirts, and a sun hat. Everyone can agree that it’s easier to move when you feel good, and being outside, especially after a long winter gives you that feel-good feeling you need to get motivated. When you get yourself outside you might notice the garden needs a little weeding and a second later you’ve got your hands in the dirt! Motivation at its finest. Stay Motivated and Accountable Picking an activity you actually like will help you stay motivated, and joining in an activity as a group can help hold you accountable. Any activity is better when you can enjoy it with good company, get some friends involved and get moving together. Try out different activities until you find one you like, some examples could be yoga or dancing. Lighter Meals Eating a lighter diet in the summer months can help you stay moving and keep you feeling motivated. Heavy winter meals will slow you down. We recommend eating seasonal fruits and vegetables and drinking a lot of water. It’s especially easy for seniors to get dehydrated, so keeping track of your water intake might be necessary to make sure you’re staying hydrated. It turns out that living in a residence operating in a Jewish tradition is actually a philosophy that benefits everyone, and restricts no one regardless of religion, race, creed, age, or social status.
At JCHC We believe that nurturing mind, body, and soul is what keeps our independent and assisted living residents happy and healthy. Our goal is to empower our seniors while allowing them to live fully and safely. Care in the Jewish tradition is based on these values, Chesed (kindness/love), Kavod (respect), Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), and Tzedakah (charity). Regardless of who you worship, we feel these values can relate to anyone and everyone. Senior Activities at JCHC We do this by keeping a busy daily activity calendar as well as opportunities to enjoy the quiet on our patio or lovely nature walks. It’s your choice how to spend your time. At JCHC, delicious food is a priority in nourishing the body and soul, as well as the company we enjoy that food with. Monday through Friday consists of restaurant-style meals in our elegant, community dining room. Our chefs are happy to cater to any dietary restrictions, kosher or vegetarian for example. Senior Amenities at JCHC Some of the amenities you will enjoy at JCHC include a beauty/barbershop, a convenience store with pantry items and fresh produce, private dining rooms for when you’re entertaining family and friends, in addition to a card room, computer center, art studio, movie theater, fitness center, and lending library. At JCHC our services range from senior housing, independent living, and assisted living to memory care and respite care. At all of our locations, we provide a culture based on our core values. Providing our residents with opportunities for fulfilling intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual activities. We maintain supportive, joyful communities where residents can engage in sharing life’s experiences. Our goal is to nurture a sense of pride and common purpose among staff, board members, and volunteers. Our experts at JCHC are here to assure you that although this is not what you are used to, you are still able to make memories together and enjoy the day with mom. We first urge you to understand that mom might not remember it’s mother’s day, if that is the case, as hard as it is just let it be. The focus isn’t on the day itself as it is just spending time together.
Focusing on mom’s favorite activities before her memory started to change is still a great way to make the day about her. If mom loved to bake or cook but can’t do so anymore, make her favorite treat the night before and bring it over to her. The sense of smell is incredibly strong and might bring back fond memories once she smells her favorite foods or even flowers, especially if those smells and sights are associated with mothers days in the past. Mother’s Day with Dementia Afflicted Seniors If Mom’s favorite activities can still be done or modified so she can still enjoy them, make the effort to do some with her. If she loves to garden you can bring her some new houseplants and transfer them into decorative planters with her. Gardening has many health benefits such as decreasing stress and anxiety, and can be a good exercise. Having houseplants in the home is also known to brighten moods as well as give responsibility and it helps create a routine. Everyone enjoys some pampering from time to time, and what a perfect time to pamper mom on mother’s day. She might enjoy you doing her hair for her, or having you paint her nails a nice color for spring. If hair and nails aren’t in your skillset, you can always try a hand and foot massage. It’s guaranteed to feel good and doesn’t require any special skills, just moms preferred lotion. Getting crafty with activities like scrapbooking is a way to spend your time together and mom gets to keep it when you’re finished. If you’re scrapbooking it might be fun to go through old photos, bringing up forgotten memories. When adding them to the scrapbook, label the photos with the names of the people, activities, and anything else that mom might want to remember about that day. Remember if there is anything mom doesn’t remember avoid trying to remind her of it and don’t argue about it, just move on to another photo. Remember What They Did For Us on Mothers Day While your parents may be slowly forgetting things, it is more important than ever that you remember how they have always cared for you, loved you, and supported you. If you’re looking for a memory care provider for mom to make her journey as comfortable as possible for everyone, our experts at JCHC have a dedicated memory care section, with specific safety features for memory care residents and trained professionals. If you have any questions, please reach out to us, we would love to hear from you. https://jchcorp.org/ The original blog is available on: https://jchcorp.org/mothers-day-activities-for-mom-in-memory-care/ |
